A week in the life of Rakhee Patel

Dental Clinician and Registrar.

Day 1:

Hi All,

This week I have the privilege of writing for the ‘week in the life of’ series.

After a rough weekend of watching the football at home in London, I have finally started to deal with the heartache of Spurs missing out on Champions League and am back in Bristol.

I work in Bristol during the week and go home to London on weekends- which is tough but I have a great post in Bristol and it’s worth the commute. I am a specialist registrar in Dental Public Health and Academic Clinical Fellow. At the moment I’m doing my consultancy training and have applied for a Pre doctoral fellowship (fingers crossed!). It’s a wonderful post- I have an office which I share with 2 others at Bristol Dental School 3 days a week (Photo), and 2 days a week I work at Bristol PCT. On weekends- I become a ‘real dentist’ and do clinical work at our practice in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. I get the best of both worlds!

I love my job- I feel like i make a real difference- at a population level as a registrar and individual level as a clinician. It’s really rewarding and it’s this feeling of satisfaction that has led me to Heart your Smile- I feel like we should give the public, our patients and our profession the best of what we have to offer- and for me this is from a Dental Public Health platform.

See you tomorrow...

Day 2:

What a day! the Olympic torch came to Bristol today.. It was so busy!! Sun shining, music and drinks... Lovely!

Instead of basking in the sun, i spent the day in my office marking exam papers!!! Sometimes it feels like its harder for the staff than students- they have to sit the paper- but we have to teach the module, plan the lectures, write the exam and mark it...which takes HOURS!! And after all the hard work- some students clearly haven't taken in anything you tried to teach them!!!

My message for today- work hard- teachers are here to mentor and inspire... always aspire to be the best you can be.

Day 3:

Had a quiet day in the office today. Trying to get as much work done as possible organising National Smile Month in Bristol. We are going to set stands up at local supermarkets and give out advice and info as well as some freebies. The Bristol undergraduates are supporting the event which combines Bristol PCT, Bristol Dental School and the Smoking Cessation team... and if all agree.. Heart your Smile can support too...we can take our message of positivity to the Bristol public.

What are you doing for National Smile Month? Post your stories.... Let's all share ideas.

Day 4:

A week in the life of Day 3: Apologies for not posting yesterday- it was a LONG day. I was in Bristol all day and then rushed to London for a HYS meeting. It was a great meeting- got lots of idea bounced around.

I learnt a really important lesson yesterday. I applied for NIHR fellowship funding and found out i didn't get shortlisted to interview. I was devastated. Its a funny thing- as dentists we aren't used to rejection especially academically. We are always thought of as bright and we work hard to achieve our goals- it's not been often for me that I've not achieved what i set out for. So yesterday was TOUGH!

It's the lesson of my career- Things don't always work out how you plan and just because you worked exceptionally hard for something it doesn't mean you'll always achieve it. So my lesson is... roll with the punches!!! Everything happens for a reason... so I'm going to apply again next year and in the meantime wait in anticipation of what's to come.
