A week in the life of Alexander Teckkam

Student President of KCL Dental Society.

Day 1:

This picture of my brilliant committee at our Annual Dental Ball shows my favourite part of being a dental student and president of KCL Dental Society; meeting new people and making a positive difference.

We have a unique opportunity to enhance peoples quality of life and that keeps me smiling throughout the day.

Day 2:

Today I attended and spoke at a lecture by Dr Tim Hogson, Consultant and clinical lead of Oral Medicine at the Eastman (Picture on the left) and had lunch with my clinical tutor group at a local haunt, that some of you may recognise (Picture on the right).

I could definitely not do my daily work without my clinical group as they provide the comedy value that keeps me happy through thick and thin.

Day 3:

Today was a brilliant day doing Prosthodontics on floor 21 in Guy's Tower. The thing that I love most about Guy's is the awe-inspiring view that you get whilst treating patients (See picture on the left).

They say that the best view of London is from the top of Guy's tower and you can definitely see why. The picture to the right is of myself in the Dental Society office, where I was until 8pm today!

Day 4:

Spent most of the day with Seema Sharma and Shivana Anand discussing a new management scheme for students, very excited about this!

The books are out in force. This will be my first day of revision! Fortunately my girlfriend, Lisa braved the snow to be here with me (picture on the left).

Day 5:

Since I stupidly forgot my camera cable in London (I am currently in Leeds at the moment), there will be no photos today or tomorrow. Fear not as I have a brilliantly silly photo to round up my week which I hope will bring a smile to your face (since that is the idea of the campaign). So... I must admit I am not the best person with words so please forgive my rather disjointed writing.

The question I would like to answer today is what is "one of the best ever lessons I learnt in my life" and this would have to be the art of smiling. Now I know this sounds really obvious and I can hear you saying "everyone knows how to smile Alex" however it is incredible how many people don't smile on a regular basis. Take a look around the next time you are on the tube and look at how many grumpy faces you see especially in the morning. You will be surprised how many look downright miserable :(.

The act of smiling releases endorphins in the brain which makes your mood brighter and your day happier. Even forcing smiles has been shown to release endorphins. Try it in the morning in front of the mirror when you are feeling a little groggy in the morning. I certainly try to if I am not running late for clinics!

I must admit that it is way past my bed time and that my brain is not functioning properly so before I go, I would like to refer you to a book that changed my life upside down "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie. It's title sounds evil however it certainly has some brilliant life lessons in there!

The weekend:

The 2 week countdown has started towards my mid-sessional exams has started and my revision today reached fever pitch, energy drinks at the ready! Despite the doom and gloom of revision, I still had time to smile about a couple of things today.

This is the first time back at home in Leeds for over a month now so my Mum's mean chicken curry definitely brought a smile to my face. Secondly, the luxury of having heating in the house is much much appreciated!
